Mandala Art Class

Here in The Shed we have ran a couple of Mandala Art classes.

As I have freely admitted previously, I don't do art, so I work with Marie Lawrence who delivers the class in The Shed for me.

These seem really popular, and the best bit is, you don't need to be an artist to create these fabulous pieces of work.

Marie takes people through the design part step-by-step, and they get to practise shapes and patterns on paper before moving onto the canvas.  She brings loads of inspirational pieces with her for people to use within their own work.

And you truly don't need to be an artist before you attend, just look at the work produced.

If you fancy this class, then keep an eye on the website for the next one coming soon.....

A giant Mandala - in a Hula Hoop

This week I have been playing with a new yarn - DMC Natural XL, which is gorgeous.... but more about that later when I do my review.

After making a few bits and bobs there was a bit left over - part balls of four bright and cheerful colours.   What can I make with these, I wondered.

What I REALLY wanted to do was to make a blanket, I just thought the yarn would lend itself so well to a lap blanket, but I didn't have enough.

A mandala, I decided.  I quite like making mandalas, especially out of my head as I just hook what I think the next row needs.

I got to work, picking up the colours in no particular order, hooking different stitches in no particular pattern.

Then of course, it got bigger and bigger.  I would need a frame to put it on.

So off I popped to Argos and picked up a twin pack of Hula Hoops.  This would make an ideal frame, I thought.

And it did!

Now, I have no where to display something quite that big, so I took it up to Hobbycraft where it got a place next to my Afghan Blanket   :)

Go have a look if you like  :)  It is in the Carlisle store, just off J44 of the M6.

A Mandala Colouring Book

I got a lovely post Christmas gift from one of my DIL's - Marie.   She is arty farty like me so I get what she likes and she gets what I like - she buys such great gifts!

Anyway, this is it.  The Mandalas colouring book.

A lovely thick, large book with loads of patterns.  You can find it HERE if you fancy one for yourself.

When I was much younger, I used to look forward to the Altair colouring books that Santa used to deposit each year in my stocking - always with a fresh set of felt-tipped pens, or pencils.  Nothing quite as nice as new pens and pencils.

I wanted a vibrant, bright look, so opted to use my fine-line Sharpies - but this meant sacrificying the other side of the page with it's equally lovely pattern, as the ink bled through.  (I put a sheet of paper underneath to save it bleeding any further into the next page.)

I just went with what felt good, and it felt good to just add one colour at a time and see where it took me.

Orange...

Dark green...

Yellow...

Turquoise blue...

Purple...

Cerise...

Red...

Lime green...

I think that is a good place to leave this particular pattern.   It has taken me a good few hours to complete.

There was a piece of colour missing though, did you spot it?   It was missing from the yellow section, and I finally found it when adding the cerise parts  :)

You should treat yourself to a grown up colouring book, it's very therapeutic   ;)

ps: The Amazon links I've scattered throughout the page are affiliated  if you click and buy I might get a few pennies.

Mandala Cushion Crochet-Along entries

If you joined in with the Crochet Along for the Mandala cushion, then you might be interested to hear that the first entries are rolling in.

The two photos below is both sides of the cushion made by my Mum Vera, who has been joining in with every round.  It was a stash-buster and the colours look great, don't you think?

The next two photos are from Margret, don't these colours just pop?  Another stash-buster and it looks fabulous.

Are you joining in too?  Entries need to be in by the end of August for you to be in with a chance of going in the draw to win this fabulous crochet hook set in a case.

Right then, if you have joined in with this crochet along - whether you have done the two single pieces or the cushion cover, send me a photograph - either to my email,soozintheshed@gmail.com, or by adding a message to my Facebook page Sooz In The Shed.

You have until the end of August 2014 to complete the project and all photos that are sent in will be entered into a random name generator and a single winner picked.  They will win the set of crochet hooks as detailed below.

It's not too late to join in  :)

Crochet along .... Mandala (11)

Welcome back, it was a quick break this time as we have very little to go and I thought we should plough on with it  :)

If you are wondering what all this is about, then click HERE to find out - we are crocheting a Mandala.

This is the stage you should be at right now.

Let's make a start on the final few rows then.
Attach a new colour and CH 7 (counts as 1 x DC and 5 CH)

DC into the space between clusters from the row below, then CH 5.

Repeat this last row all the way around, then SS to join, do not cut yarn.

Work 4 x DC's into the chain spaces all the way around.

Join a new colour into the stop of any of the DC's and CH 4 (counts as 1 x TR and 1 CH.

The next stitch will be a TREBLE TREBLE - you wrap your yarn round the hook THREE times before going through your work and bringing your yarn back through (5 loops on hook), ** wrap yarn around and take two off (4 loops)  Repeat from ** until you only have 1 loop left.

*** So, make that TR-TR inbetween the clusters of 2 DC's from the top of the 4 rows of colour BEHIND the last row.

CH 1 and work a TR into the top of the DC from the previous round.

Repeat from *** all the way round and SS to join.

Add a new colour into the BACK LOOPS only and DC all the way around, SS to join.

Add a new colour into the BACK LOOPS only and HTR all the way around, SS to join.

Whoooosh!!  I do believe that is both Mandalas very nearly finished.  Well done you!!

Right, you might want to finish them off with an edging, or you might want to put them together to make a cushion cover - it should fit an 18" round Cushion pad - you can find them at Dunelm.

The next stitch I am going to show you is Crab Stitch - it is a Double Crochet, but worked in the opposite direction to what you would usually work, giving a nice twisted rope effect.  If you want to leave your Mandalas as single pieces, work each one with the Crab stitch separately, if you wish to make a cushion cover we are going to join them together by using Crab Stitch.

FOR THE CUSHION COVER: Place your Mandalas nice side outwards (for both).

I then put a marker stitch at 4 places so it would hold it all in place and I could use it as a guide that it was joining nicely.

Join a new yarn into a stitch from each of the Mandalas (or a single one if you are doing flat pieces) and CH 2.

Now, insert your hook into the stitch BEFORE, like this...  and make a DC as you normally would, the yarn passes over the previous stitch creating a rope like effect.

Ohhh, sorry, blurry photo.

Work around 3/4 of the cover before inserting the cushion, then work the rest with the cushion in place.

And there you go, a beautiful, reversible cushion, for you to show off your crochet skills.

Right then, if you have joined in with this crochet along - whether you have done the two single pieces or the cushion cover, send me a photograph - either to my email, soozintheshed@gmail.com, or by adding a message to my Facebook page Sooz In The Shed.

You have until the end of August 2014 to complete the project and all photos that are sent in will be entered into a random name generator and a single winner picked.  They will win the set of crochet hooks as detailed below.

It's not too late to join in  :)

The links below are all the instalments for both Mandalas, feel free to work through them at your own pace and I would love to see any finished pieces  :)
